Corporal Max Schlund

Company B, 82nd Illinois Infantry

Schlund was born in Germany on May 21, 1844. The 18 year old Schlund was residing in Chicago (Cook County), Illinois when he enlisted on August 7, 1862. He was mustered on September 26, 1862 and served about 2 years and 8 months. Schlund enlisted as a private and was promoted to corporal during his tour of duty. He was discharged on June 9, 1865 at Washington DC.

The 82nd Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Springfield, Illinois on October 23, 1862. During his enlistment, the unit was involved in many major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:

Battle of Chancellorsville (VA) (May 1-5, 1863). Regimental casualties were 32 killed, 9 wounded, 1 captured, and 2 reported missing in fighting on May 2-3, 1863.

Battle of Gettysburg (PA) (July 1-3, 1863). Regimental losses were 6 killed, 8 wounded, 5 captured, and 2 reported missing.

Atlanta (GA) Campaign (May 3-September 8, 1864).

Battle of Resaca (GA) (May 14-15, 1864).

Battle of Dallas (GA) (May 24-26, 1864). Regimental losses were 10 killed and 4 wounded).

Battle of Peach Tree Creek (GA) (July 19-20, 1864). Regimental losses were 10 killed and 3 wounded on July 20, 1864.

Siege of Atlanta (GA) (July 22-August 25, 1864).

General Sherman’s “March to the Sea” (GA) (November 15-December 10, 1864).

Siege of Savannah (GA) (December 10-21, 1864).

Campaign of the Carolinas (January-April 1865).

Battle of Bentonville (NC) (March 19-21, 1865).

At the Bennett House (Raleigh NC) when General Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee (April 26, 1865).

Grand Review of the Troops (Washington DC) (May 24, 1865).

Schlund died on August 23, 1932 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo (Hall County), Nebraska. Schlund was a member of the Cedar Mountain Post (#220) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Ravenna, Nebraska.
