Shaw was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 4, 1846. He was residing in Pekin (Tazewell County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on May 5, 1864. Shaw was mustered on June 1, 1864 and served until October 28, 1864. He was discharged at Peoria, Illinois.
The 139th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Peoria, Illinois on June 1, 1864. The regiment was involved in action against General Sterling Price’s invasion of Missouri in 1864.
Shaw died on March 4, 1934 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Olive Branch Cemetery in Mills (Keya Paha County), Nebraska.
