Sterling was born in September of 1846. He enlisted in the 6th Michigan Infantry on August 6, 1861 at Schoolcraft, Michigan. Sterling was mustered on August 20, 1861 and served about 15 months. He was discharged and enlisted and mustered in the 2nd United States Artillery on November 17, 1862. Information regarding his length of service with the 2nd US Artillery was not available.

Sterling died on March 7, 1934 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Blue Mound Cemetery in Milford (Seward County), Nebraska.
