Steven was born in Milton (Dupage County), Illinois on September 26, 1847. He was residing in Milton when the 17 year old enlisted on February 14, 1865. Steven was mustered on February 27, 1865. He served about 7 months and was discharged on September 21, 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.
The 153rd Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Camp Fry, Illinois on February 27, 1865. The 1-year unit was assigned to guard duty on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad in the Memphis area.
Steven died January 18, 1934 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Geneva Cemetery in Geneva (Fillmore County), Nebraska. Steven was a member of the Wilson Post (#22) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Geneva.
