Stevens was born in Adams County, Illinois on July 15, 1848. Illinois records indicate that Stevens was 18 years old when he enlisted on July 26, 1862. Based on his date of birth, he was 14 years old. Stevens was residing in Beverly (Adams County), Illinois when he was mustered on August 23, 1862. He served nearly 3 years before he was discharged on July 31, 1862 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The 99th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Florence, Illinois on August 23, 1862. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Battle of Champion’s Hill (MS) (May 16, 1863).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863). Regimental losses were 17 killed and 20 wounded on May 22, 1863.
Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).
Occupation of Mobile (AL) (April 12, 1865).
Stevens died on May 20, 1930 at the age of 81 years. He is buried in the Valley View Cemetery in Genoa (Nance County), Nebraska. Stevens was a member of two (2) Grand Army of the Republic posts:
Sedgwick Post (#1) in Kearney, Nebraska.
Corinth Post (#153) in Genoa, Nebraska.
