Sutton was born in Peoria County, Illinois on June 17, 1841. He was residing in Trivoli (Peoria County), Illinois when he enlisted on August 11, 1862. Sutton was mustered on September 2, 1862. He served about 2 years and 10 months before he was discharged on July 10, 1865 at Mobile, Alabama.
The 77th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered at Peoria on September 3, 1862. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in several major battles and campaigns. Some of them include:
Assault and capture of Fort Hindman (AK) (January 10-11, 1863).
Battle of Champion’s Hill (MS) (May 16, 1863).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863). Regimental losses were 17 killed and 4 wounded during the Siege.
Red River Campaign (LA) (March 10-May 22, 1864).
Siege of Fort Blakley (AL) (March 26-April 8, 1865).
Sutton died on October 20, 1930 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Hooper Cemetery in Hooper (Dodge County), Nebraska.
