Sweely (also spelled Sweeley) was born in LaSalle County, Illinois on December 10, 1844. He was residing in Peoria, Illinois when he enlisted in the 139th Illinois Infantry on May 17, 1864. Sweely was mustered on June 1, 1864 and served until October 28, 1864. He was discharged at Peoria, Illinois.
He reenlisted and mustered as a member of the 14th Illinois Infantry on February 18, 1865. He was promoted to corporal during his 2nd tour and was discharged on September 16, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Sweely died on August 27, 1931 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield (Clay County), Nebraska. Sweely was a member of the Brown Post (#76) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Exeter, Nebraska.
