Sumner was born in New York on October 3, 1835. He was residing in Middleton (Dane County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the 1st US Sharpshooters on September 9, 1861. He served over 3 years before transferring to the 2nd US Sharpshooters on December 31, 1864. Sumner served a little less than 3 months with the 2nd unit and transferred to the 36th Wisconsin Infantry on February 18, 1865. He served an additional 5 months with the 3rd unit and was discharged on July 12, 1865 at Jeffersonville, Indiana.
He died on June 19, 1931 at the age of 95 years. He is buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia (Greeley County), Nebraska.
