Stewart was born in Canada on April 8, 1845. He was residing in Portage (Columbia County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on February 14, 1865. He served a little over 7 months and was discharged on September 27, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 46th Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin on March 2, 1865. The unit was assigned to Tennessee and Alabama and performed duty along the Nashville & Decatur Railroad. The regiment was mustered out on September 27, 1865.
Stewart died on April 4, 1931 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska.
