Stock was born in Wayne County, Indiana on May 11, 1846. He was residing in Rush (Jo Daviess County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on May 14, 1864. Stock was mustered on June 18, 1864 and served until October 26, 1864. He was mustered out in Chicago.
The 142nd Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered for 100 days on June 18, 1864. It was assigned to Tennessee and performed guard duty on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.
Stock died on February 1, 1934 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Parkview Cemetery in Hastings (Adams County), Nebraska. Stock was a member of the Strickland Post (#13) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Hastings.
