Thomas was born in Daviess County, Indiana on September 2, 1844. He was residing in Anamosa (Jones County), Iowa when he enlisted on May 14, 1864. Thomas was mustered on June 1, 1864 and served until September 15, 1864. He was discharged on September 15, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa.
The 44th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Davenport on June 1, 1864. The unit was enlisted for 100 days of service and assigned to the Memphis area.
Thomas died on September 14, 1932 at the age of 88 years. He is buried in the Osmond Cemetery in Osmond (Pierce County), Nebraska. Thomas was a member of the Chase Post (#143) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Madison, Nebraska.
