Private Robert G Thurston

Thurston was born in Ohio on December 25, 1846. He was residing in Linn County, Iowa when he enlisted on August 22, 1862. Thurston was mustered on September 24, 1862 and served about 33 months. He was discharged on June 27, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
The 33rd Iowa Infantry organized and mustered at Oskaloosa on October 4, 1862. During his enlistment, the unit was involved in several battles and campaigns. Three (3) of them include:
Battle of Helena (AR) (July 4, 1863). Regimental losses were 18 killed, 49 wounded, and 19 captured.
Capture of Little Rock (AK) (September 10, 1863).
Battle of Saline River (AK) (April 30, 1864). Regimental losses were 6 killed, 111 wounded, and 58 captured.
Thurston died on March 20, 1932 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Royal Cemetery in Royal (Antelope County), Iowa.
