VanHorn was born in Wisconsin on January 21, 1845. He was residing in Spring Prairie (Walworth County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on February 14, 1865. He served 1 year and was discharged on February 19, 1866.
The 48th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Milwaukee in February and March 1865. The unit was assigned to Kansas for provost duty and was stationed at Fort Scott.
VanHorn died on September 2, 1936 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk (Madison County), Nebraska. VanHorn was a member of two Nebraska Grand Army of the Republic Posts:

Lauman Post (#193) in Plainview, Nebraska.
