Whiffin (also spelled Wiffin) was born in Oneida County, New York on September 5, 1847. He was residing in Kewanee (Henry County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the 124th Illinois Infantry. Whiffin served about 6 months before transferring to the 33rd Illinois when July 16, 1865. He served an additional 4 months before he was discharged on November 4, 1865.
He died on April 22, 1934 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in DeWitt (Saline County), Nebraska. Whiffin was a member of the Curtis Post (#89) of the Grand Army of the Republic in DeWitt.
