Westfall was born in Wayne County on July 18, 1847. The 17 year old enlisted and mustered as a substitute on November 2, 1864. Westfall’s date of discharge was not available. It was probably June 24, 1865 when the regiment was mustered out.
The 43rd Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison between August 8 and September 30, 1864. It was moved to Tennessee and performed guard duty on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad.
Westfall died on August 14, 1936 at the age of 89 years. He is buried in the Industry Cemetery in Holdrege (Phelps County), Nebraska. Westfall was a member of the Pratt Post (#334) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Atlanta, Nebraska.
