Woods was born in Madison (Jefferson County), Indiana on July 17, 1847. He enlisted in the battalion on August 25, 1864 and served about a little over 5 months. Woods was discharged on February 6, 1865.
The 1st Nebraska Battalion was organized at Omaha between January and August 1864. It performed operations against Indians in Nebraska and Colorado and guarded mail routes.
Woods died on February 24, 1930 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the Pawnee City Cemetery in Pawnee City (Pawnee County), Nebraska.
