Wilhite was born in Menard County, Illinois on March 21, 1845. He was residing in Petersburg (Menard County), Illinois when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on May 25, 1861. Wilhite served nearly 2 years before he was discharged on April 23, 1863 due to disability.
He died on February 27, 1932 at the age of 86 years. Wilhite is buried in the Steele Cemetery in Falls City (Richardson County), Nebraska. He was a member of the Veterans Post (#84) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Falls City.
