Private Gideon Frownfelter

18th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery

Frownfelter was born in Mansfield, Ohio on December 29, 1842. He was living in Gallia County, Ohio when he enlisted in the regiment on July 28, 1862. Frownfelter was mustered on September 13, 1862 and went on to serve about 34 months. He was mustered out on June 29, 1865 at Camp Denison, Ohio.

The 18th Independent Battery was organized and mustered at Camp Portsmouth, Ohio on September 13, 1862. During Frownfelter’s enlistment the unit was involved in several major battles. A partial list includes:

Battle of Chickamauga (GA) (September 19-20, 1863).

Battle of Chattanooga (TN) (November 23-25, 1864).

Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864).

Frownfelter died on April 19, 1933 at the age of 90 years. He is buried in the Carleton Cemetery in Carleton (Thayer County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Ord Post (#168) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Carleton.
