Miller was born in Illinois on April 30, 1844. He was mustered in the regiment on August 11, 1862 and served 3 years. Miller was mustered out of the outfit at Galveston, Texas on July 30, 1865.
The 76th Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered on August 22, 1862 at Kankakee, Illinois. The unit was part of the Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (May 18-July 4, 1863) and was assigned to service in several southern states during the War.
Miller died on June 11, 1935 at the age of 91 years. He is buried in the Hemingford Cemetery in Hemingford (Box Butte County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Hemingford Post (#281) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Hemingford.
