Brown was born in Quincy (Adams County), Illinois on March 17, 1849. He was residing in Sciota (McDonough County), Illinois when he enlisted and was mustered on February 17, 1865. Illinois enlistment records indicate that he was 18 years old when he enlisted. If the date of birth and the enlistment date is accurate, Brown was 15 years old. Brown served about 11 months and was mustered out on January 24, 1866 at Columbus, Georgia.
The 151st Illinois Infantry was organized and mustered for 1 year on February 23, 1865 at Quincy, Illinois. It was assigned to duty in Georgia until it was mustered out in January 1866.
Brown died on May 5, 1943 at the age of 94 years. He died at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Lincoln. Brown is buried in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. He was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Lincoln. In 1925, he was the Department Commander of the Nebraska GAR.
