Alexander was born in Pennsylvania on September 25, 1844. He was living in Dubuque (Dubuque County), Iowa when he enlisted in the regiment on May 6, 1864. He was mustered in on June 10, 1864 and served a little over 3 months. Alexander was mustered out at Davenport, Iowa on September 23, 1864.
The 46th Iowa Infantry was organized at Davenport on June 10, 1864. The unit was sent to Tennessee and assigned to guard duty on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad until September 1864.
Alexander died on August 22, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Oakdale Cemetery in Oakdale (Antelope County), Nebraska. Alexander was the last member of the Kilpatrick Post (#82) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Oakdale.
