Private Henry H. Copp

Company I/C, 1st Missouri Engineers

Copp was born in Tionga County, Pennsylvania on August 3, 1840. He enlisted and was mustered at Denmark (Lee County), Iowa into the regiment on September 15, 1861. Copp served over 3 years and was mustered out November 18, 1864.

The 1st Missouri Engineers was organized February 17, 1864 by the consolidation of Bissell’s Engineer Regiment and the 25th Missouri Infantry. Company I of the Bissell Regiment was organized in Iowa and mustered October 31, 1861 in St. Louis. During Copp’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in the Vicksburg Campaign and was assigned to that location until January 15, 1864.

Copp died on September 26, 1939 at the age of 99 years. He is buried in the Brewster Cemetery in Brewster (Blaine County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Tucker Post (#96) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Taylor and the Marcy Post (#257) of the GAR in Brewster.
