Henderson was born in 1843. He enlisted and was mustered into the Regiment on September 1, 1864. Henderson served 4 months and was mustered out on December 31, 1864 at Denver.

The 3rd Colorado Cavalry was organized at Denver between August 20 and September 21, 1864. The unit was designated for 100 days of service. It was assigned to duties against the Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians in Colorado. The most notable engagement for the unit occurred on November 30, 1864 at Sand Creek in the Colorado Territory.

Henderson died in 1930. Two Civil War sources indicate that he is buried in the Culbertson Cemetery in Culbertson (Hitchcock County), Nebraska. He was the last member of the Kleven Post (#146) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Culbertson.
