Sherman was born in New York State on February 27, 1837. He was living in Platteville (Grant County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on March 10, 1865. Sherman served about 5 months and was mustered out on May 12, 1865.

The 50th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison, Wisconsin in March and April 1865. During Sherman’s enlistment, the unit was assigned to the Benton Barracks in St Louis.

Sherman died on February 27, 1923 at the age of 86 years. Sherman is buried in the Mineola Cemetery in O’Neill (Holt County), Nebraska. He was a charter member and the last member of the Washington Post (#335) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Dorsey, Nebraska.
