Private James Light

Company B, 33rd Indiana Infantry

Light was born on January 14, 1842. He enlisted in the regiment on August 31, 1861. He was mustered in on September 16, 1861 and served 3 years. Light was mustered out on September 19, 1864.

The 33rd Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Indianapolis on September 16, 1861. On March 4, 1863 the majority of the regiment was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Thompson’s Station in Kentucky. The captives were exchanged on May 5, 1863 and rejoined the unit. The outfit was assigned to the Atlanta (GA) Campaign and served in that operation from May 1 to September 8, 1864. Light was discharged on September 19, 1864.

Light died on July 5, 1924 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the Morningview Cemetery in Wallace (Lincoln County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Cody Post (#258) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Wallace.
