Joy was born in Calhoun County, Michigan on May 22, 1847. The 17 year old enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 25, 1865. He served about 8 months and was mustered out on November 11, 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee.
He died on August 28, 1929 at the age of 81 years. He is buried in the Edgar Cemetery in Edgar (Clay County), Nebraska. He was the last member of the Oak Post (#290) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Oak, Nebraska.
