Wilson was born in 1839. He was living in Columbia County, Pennsylvania when he enlisted and commissioned as an assistant surgeon on August 2, 1862. He served about 20 months with the 110th Pennsylvania Infantry and was discharged for promotion on March 24, 1864. He was commissioned as a surgeon on March 24, 1864 in the 49th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wilson served with that unit for 7 months and was discharged on October 31, 1864.
He died on July 12, 1894 and is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City (Otoe County), Nebraska. The Wilson Post (#334) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Nebraska City is named for Wilson. In addition, he was a member of the Baumer Post (#24) in Nebraska City.
