Company H, 13th Illinois Cavalry

Graves was born in Castleton (Rutland County), Vermont on December 23, 1822. He was residing in Rockford (Winnebago County), Illinois when he enlisted on September 20, 1861. The 39 year old enlisted as a sergeant and was mustered in on December 31, 1861. He served his 3 year enlistment and was mustered out on December 31, 1864. Graves was promoted to 1st sergeant on May 23, 1863 and to 2nd lieutenant on September 5, 1864.

The 13th Illinois Cavalry was organized at Camp Douglas, Illinois between October 30, 1861 and February 20, 1862. The unit was assigned to duties in several southern states and fought at the Battle of Jenkins’ Ferry (AR) on April 30, 1864.

Graves died on January 29, 1876 at the age of 53 years. He is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in York (York County), Nebraska. The Graves Post (#97) in Bradshaw, Nebraska is named for Graves.
