Hotze (also spelled Hodze) was born on March 7, 1843. He enlisted in the regiment on September 1, 1864 and served 1 year. He was mustered out on September 1, 1865.
The 54th Kentucky Infantry was organized at New Castle, Kentucky in September 1864. The unit was assigned to duties in Kentucky and performed actions against guerrillas, destroying salt works, and provost duty.
Hotze died on September 25, 1937 at the age of 94 years. He is buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Indianola (Red Willow County), Nebraska. He was a member of the Indianola Post (#154) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Indianola.
