Stewart was born in Ohio on April 7, 1845. The 19 year old enlisted in the regiment on April 27, 1864. Stewart was mustered in the unit at Gallipolis, Ohio on May 1, 1864. He served about 4 months and was mustered out on September 3, 1864.
The 172nd Ohio Infantry was organized and mustered at Gallipolis on May 14, 1864. Gallipolis is located in the southeastern part of Ohio in Gallia County and is situated on the Ohio River. The unit stayed at Gallipolis and was assigned to guard duty for the entire 4 months. Twelve (12) members of the unit died due to disease.
Stewart died on October 2, 1931 at the age of 86 years. He is buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Liberty (Gage County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Barry Post (#159) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Liberty.
