Drury was born in Pennsylvania on January 11, 1843. He was living in Avon (Lake County), Illinois when he enlisted in the 96th Illinois Infantry on August 11, 1862. The 20 year old farmer was mustered on September 6, 1862. He served about 8 months before being discharged on May 21, 1863 for disability reasons.
He re-entered the Union Army on February 8, 1865 as a member of Company E of the 9th Illinois Cavalry. Drury served 8 months with the regiment. He was mustered out on October 31, 1865 at Selma, Alabama.
Drury died on September 11, 1888 at the age of 45 years. He is buried in the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons (Burt County), Nebraska. The Drury Post (#278) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Pender, Nebraska was named for him. In addition, he was a member of the Granger Post (#119) of the GAR in Decatur, Nebraska.
