Corporal Vance J Cross

Cross was born on October 1, 1841. He enlisted as a corporal in the battalion on June 23, 1863. He was mustered in on August 22, 1863. His date of discharge was not available. One Civil War sources indicates that he was absent due to illness on March 8, 1864.
The 4th Independent Battalion was organized at Cincinnati from August 3 to September 21, 1863. The unit was designated as a 6 month unit. It was mustered out in February and March 1864.
Cross died on May 8, 1929 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Kimball Cemetery in Kimball (Kimball County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Weeks Post (#305) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Harrisburg, Nebraska.
