Private Jefferson T Chapman
Company H, 43rd Wisconsin Infantry
Chapman was born in Grant County, Wisconsin on May 26, 1850. There is some question regarding Chapman’s date of birth. Enlistment records indicate that Chapman enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on September 6, 1864. If the date of birth is correct, Chapman was 14 years old when he enlisted. He served about 10 months before being mustered out on June 24, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
The 43rd Wisconsin Infantry was organized and mustered in Madison, Wisconsin between August 8 and September 30, 1864. The unit was sent to Tennessee and performed guard duty on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad.
Chapman died on February 5, 1935 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin (Antelope County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Hayes Post (#327) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Elgin.
