Jenkins was born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania on September 21, 1845. He enlisted in the regiment on May 13, 1863. He was mustered on June 3, 1863 and served about 26 months. He was mustered out August 9, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
The 3rd Iowa Cavalry was organized at Keokuk between August 30 and September 14, 1861. During Jenkins’ enlistment, the regiment was involved in operations along the Kansas and Missouri border. They fought at the Battle of Westport (October 23, 1864) in the Kansas City area. The unit was sent to Georgia and was mustered out at Atlanta on August 9, 1865.
Jenkins died on May 11, 1936. He is buried in tne Nebraska Veterans Home Cemetery in Grand Island (Hall County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Holbrook Post (#347) in Holbrook, Nebraska.
