Campbell (also spelled Cammel) was born in Scotland on December 11, 1847. The 17 year old enlisted on February 27, 1865. He was mustered on March 11, 1865 and served about 5 months. He was mustered out on August 4, 1865 at Winchester, Virginia.
The 193rd Ohio Infantry was organized and mustered at Camp Chase (Columbus) in 1865. The unit was assigned to duty in West Virginia until it was mustered out in August 1865.
Campbell died on January 24, 1920 at the age of 72 years. He is buried in the Grand Island Cemetery in Grand Island (Hall County), Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Brewer Post (#323) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Gordon, Nebraska. In addition, he was a member of the Whipple Post (#354) of the GAR in Burkett, Nebraska.
