May was born in Henry County, Illinois on August 18, 1845. He was living in Dorchester (Allamakee County), Iowa when the enlisted in the regiment on August 15, 1862. May enlisted as a 17 year old private and served nearly 3 years. He was mustered out on August 8, 1865 at Clinton, Iowa.
The 27th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Dubuque on October 3, 1862. The regiment was assigned to duty in several southern states during the Civil War. On April 9, 1864 the unit fought at the Battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. Regimental losses were 5 killed, 76 wounded, and 23 were captured.
May die don March 12, 1913 at the age of 67 years. He is buried in the Alliance Cemetery in Alliance (Box Butte County), Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Nonpariel Post (#268) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Nonpariel, Nebraska.
