Roby was born in Ohio on March 1, 1842. He was living in Dahlonega (Wapello County), Iowa when he enlisted in the regiment on August 15, 1861. He was mustered on September 12, 1861 and served about 15 months. He was discharged on December 25, 1862 due to disability.
Roby died on July 30, 1918. He is buried in the Juniata Cemetery in Juniata (Adams County), Nebraska. Roby was one of the last members of the Doan Post (#226) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Gandy, Nebraska.
