Campbell was born on July 16, 1846. The 16 year old enlisted in the regiment at Greenville, New York on October 7, 1862. He was mustered in on November 17, 1862 and served nearly 3 years. Campbell was mustered out on October 23, 1865 at Augusta, Georgia.
The 156th New York Infantry was organized and mustered at Kingston, New York on November 17, 1862. During his enlistment, the unit was engaged in several major battles and military operations. Some of them include:
Siege of Port Hudson (LA) (May 25-July 9, 1863).
General Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign (VA) (August 5-November 28, 1864).
Battle of Winchester (VA) (September 19, 1864).Regimental losses were 18 killed, 75 wounded, and 3 captured.
Battle of Cedar Creek (VA) (October 19, 1864).
Campbell died on October 8, 1925 at the age of 79 years. He is buried in the Crofton Cemetery in Crofton (Knox County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Porter Post (#230) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Bloomfield, Nebraska.
