June 8, 1957 - June 12, 1957 • Rosenblatt Stadium, Omaha, Nebraska • Attendance: 26,609
Considered the best team to play in Omaha since the College World Series arrived in 1950, the 1957 California team dominated the CWS like no team had before, going 5-0 during the week to earn the national championship.
Nobody really came close.
California topped Northern Colorado 4-0 before defeating Iowa State 8-2. Penn State fell to the Bears 8-0 and Iowa State lost their rematch 9-1. The closest any team got to the Bears was Penn State in a 1-0 loss in the championship game.
The Bears earned the title in coach George Wolfman's third season with California.
Cal Emery, Penn State
In his first year of varsity competition, the sophomore pitched a three-hit victory over Texas, striking out five and walking four; limited California to three hits and one run, fanning nine; played three errorless games at first base; hit .285 and batted in three runs in the series. He also drew three walks in the championship game.
The left-hander was a unanimous selection.
Note: All-Tournament team selections were not handed out prior to the 1958 College World Series.
