Arizona State junior right-hander Tom Burgess pitched a complete-game gem to lead the Sun Devils to their second College World Series title in three years, defeating Houston 11-2 in the championship game.
Burgess allowed 12 hits and two earned runs while striking out 15 to silence the Cougars in their quest for their first baseball championship. The 15 strikeouts were a CWS finale record.
Houston set a CWS finale record as well, but the Cougars will not look fondly upon it. Houston registered six errors in the championship game which led to four unearned runs. Houston shortstop Art Toombs tied a finals record by committing three errors.
Arizona State catcher Ron Davini batted .409 in six series games and played a large role defensively to earn the most outstanding player honors.
