Pat Kuehner faced a terrible tragedy when his brother was killed in an automobile accident one week before the 1968 College World Series. It was to Southern California's utter delight that he would be the one to win them their fifth baseball national championship.
Kuehner got the walk-off triple with two outs when he sent an 0-2 pitch to the outfield fence, scoring two runs and thrusting Southern California over Southern Illinois 4-3 in the ninth inning of the championship game. Kuehner was mobbed by his teammates and carried off the field on their shoulders.
Southern Cal first baseman Bill Seinsoth tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Bill Seinsoth, Southern California
The first baseman compiled a .389 batting average for the series.
His two-run homer tied the title game for the eventual champs.
