After relinquishing an early 4-0 lead, USC won in dramatic fashion — shutting out the Sun Devils in the final three innings. USC sophomore pitcher Jeff Reinke retired the final 11 batters to preserve the victory — the second against Arizona State in the CWS.
Senior first baseman Daryl Arenstein became the first player to perform on four CWS championship clubs. Though hitless in the in the championship game, Arenstein held up his reputation on defense — playing errorless baseball.
Finishing the season 51-11, Southern California became the fifth team to win the College World Series in Omaha without a loss. The others: Oklahoma (1951), California (1957) and USC (1961, 1968).
