Richard Wortham, whose pitching future was jeopardized by an accident the previous October, hurled a four-hitter to give Texas the championship.
Wortham, with the help of Mickey Reichenbach's two-run homer in the third, beat South Carolina 5-1 in the windup to the double-elimination tournament.
The Longhorns, benefiting from the bye that gave them an off night the night before, won their third CWS title.
The Longhorns had been in Omaha for more tournaments than any other club.
Their first two titles were under 25-year coach Bibb Falk.
South Carolina, in its sixth year under coach Bobby Richardson, had never been in the CWS.
