Arizona State junior right-hander Jerry Vasquez provided a fitting climax for a season coach Jim Brock said began in apathy.
That apathy was the result of the rebuilding job that confronted the Sun Devils after their disappointing loss to eventual champion Arizona in the 1976 College World Series.
So it was appropriate that Vasquez, a walk-on transfer from Scottsdale Community College, should pitch the Sun Devils to the championship by beating South Carolina 2-1.
"We're different," Vasquez said of the Sun Devils. "They call us the 'Bah, Bah Black Sheep.' I can't explain it."
The national championship was the fourth for Arizona State — but the first for the 40-year-old coach. The other titles were under Bobby Winkles in 1965, 1967, and 1969.
Though he had led the Sun Devils to the CWS five of the six years he had been coach, Brock had said the previous week: "I will never feel I have been successful until Arizona State wins the national championship."
