Series highlights

Overshadowed by heavy-hitting teammates, Louisiana State outfielders Rich Cordani and Armando Rios refused to be overwhelmed by Wichita State ace Tyler Green.

Cordani and Rios came through with the big hits that helped get the Tigers over the hump in a 6-3 victory over Wichita State in the championship game of the College World Series. The win gave LSU, which had made five trips to the CWS under Coach Skip Bertman, its first national title.

The Tigers had not won more than two games in any of their four previous trips to the CWS under Bertman.

Most Outstanding Player

Gary Hymel, Louisiana State

The LSU catcher Gary, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., hit .500 in four games with a CWS record-tying four home runs and 10 RBIs.

The champion Tigers led all teams with four selections. No other school had more than two.
