It's difficult to imagine the varsity baseball season going any better than it did for Omaha Westside's Jake Meyers.

The senior batted .440 and led the Warriors in runs scored with 51. He also was 9-0 on the mound with a 0.97 ERA and 80 strikeouts.

Those efforts helped Westside earn its second straight Class A title and helped land Meyers on the All-Nebraska squad for the second consecutive year. He is one of four Warriors on the first team, and Meyers — a Nebraska recruit — is the honorary captain of this year's All-Nebraska team.

The other first-teamers from Westside are outfielders Devin Stueck and Drew Fitzmorris and infielder/pitcher Mike Waldron. That quartet helped the Warriors finish 35-3 while pulling down the school's seventh state championship.

In addition to Meyers, other first-team pitchers are Jacob Barton of Omaha Skutt, Byron Hood of Norris and Logan Jacik of Millard West.

Other first-team infielders are catcher Jakson Reetz of Norris, Grant Suponchick of Papillion-La Vista South, Alec Bohm of Omaha Roncalli and Michael Helman of Lincoln Pius X. Rounding out the first team are outfielder Cole Patterson of Bellevue West, designated hitter Dillon O'Doherty of Omaha Creighton Prep and Brook Bolles of Lincoln North Star.

The four returning members of the first team are Meyers, Reetz, Hood and Waldron.

Nominations by coaches and observations by World-Herald sportswriters determine the newspaper's honor teams.

Meyers, a 6-foot-1 left-hander, set the bar high this season after his performance in 2013. He led the state-champion Warriors in hitting last year with a .442 average and had a 4-0 pitching mark.

"We talked about our expectations during the preseason, and we thought that if we worked hard, we could get that second straight state championship," Meyers said. "We really wanted it pretty bad."

In addition to his tangible contributions in the box scores, Westside coach Bob Greco said Meyers also delivered in another way.

"His baseball ability is really something," the coach said. "But Jake really improved this season in the leadership area. He was pretty vocal talking about what it took to win, and the other kids took that to heart."

It was Meyers who took the hill for Westside in its championship game against Omaha Creighton Prep, and the senior responded with one of his best efforts of the season. He tossed a five-hitter and struck out 12 to lead the Warriors to a 7-3 win and their first championship repeat.

At the state tournament, Meyers threw two complete-game victories with 21 strikeouts and batted .611.

"You can never have enough kids like Jake on your team," Greco said. "We're going to miss him next season."

Meyers is competing for Westside's American Legion team this summer — he had seven RBIs in a recent victory — before he heads to Nebraska.

"We're hoping to get the Legion team to nationals," Meyers said. "And then I'm looking forward to becoming a Husker."

Reetz, another Nebraska recruit, batted .486 for Class B Norris. He led the team in RBIs (37), doubles (13) and home runs (8).

Reetz's teammate Hood, another Husker recruit, went 5-0 for the Titans with a 2.20 ERA in 43 ⅓ innings. He struck out 60 and helped Norris, the 2013 Class B champion, earn its sixth state tourney berth.

Mike Waldron had another outstanding season for Westside after going 6-2 last year to land a spot on the All-Nebraska team as a sophomore. He batted .350 and also was 6-0 as a pitcher with a 1.35 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 41 ⅓ innings.

Stueck batted .446 for the Warriors and led the team in hits with 50. The speedy center fielder also scored 50 runs, drove in 38 and had 12 doubles.

Fitzmorris, who missed out on last year's state championship squad because of injury, made up for lost time in 2014. The left fielder led Westside in batting average (.452) and RBIs (42).

Skutt's Barton was one of the top pitchers in Class B, going 6-0 with a 0.91 ERA. He struck out 67 in 53 ⅔ innings and helped the SkyHawks finish as the state runner-up to Lincoln Pius X.

Jacik was the latest in a long line of hard throwers from Millard West. He was 6-2 on the mound and also batted .350 while leading the team in doubles (13) and triples (3) and tying for the lead in RBIs (25).

Suponchick, a second-team All-Nebraska selection last year as a sophomore, batted .374 for the Titans. He also was one of the team's top pitchers with five wins and 48 strikeouts.

Bohm, a Wichita State recruit, helped the Class B Crimson Pride earn their 10th trip to state. He batted .526 and led Roncalli in RBIs (29), runs scored (29), triples (4) and home runs (6).

Helman was one of the top performers for the Class B champion Thunderbolts. He batted .439 and was 6-0 as a pitcher with a 0.18 ERA.

The hot-hitting Patterson helped Bellevue West nail down its first state tournament berth since 1991. He led Class A in batting average at .507 and led the state in home runs with 12.

Prep's lone representative on the first team is O'Doherty, who batted .425. He led the Class A state runner-up Junior Jays in hits (45), RBIs (38), doubles (14) and home runs (6).

The utility player on the All-Nebraska first team is Bolles, a standout performer for North Star. The Navigators' top pitcher batted .290 and had a 1.99 ERA in 31 ⅔ innings while striking out 30.
