Reflecting excellence

Look of a winner: All-Nebraska captain Jordan Johnson of Millard South was the winning pitcher of the past three state title games.

By Steve Beideck / World-Herald correspondent

They sparkled at Thursday's photo shoot for the 22nd World-Herald All-Nebraska team just as they did throughout the 2014 high school softball season.

Those 13 talented players gathered at the Duck Pond at Papillion's Halleck Park, adding a final chapter to their award-winning seasons.

For eight of those players it was the final time they would wear their high school uniforms. The other five — juniors Kellyn Daly, Emily Klosterman, Sierra Athow and Sam Dellinger, as well as sophomore Rylie Unzicker — have a chance to add to their résumés next season.

But as they posed on the north side of the pond, all 13 players had a chance to reflect on their seasons that led to being recognized as one of Nebraska's best.

It's not just gaudy statistics that impressed coaches who vote on the honors teams. Those votes, combined with observations of World-Herald staff, ultimately determine the makeup of the teams.

Six of the players are repeat selections, and two of them from Class A champion Millard South are being honored for the third consecutive time.

REBECCA S. GRATZ/THE WORLD-HERALD

Pitcher Jordan Johnson is Millard South’s all-time leader in victories, and she hit .429 with four doubles, one triple and two home runs this season.

Patriots pitcher Jordan Johnson and shortstop Vicky Kinney now are on that short list of three-time All-Nebraska performers. They led Millard South to its fourth consecutive state title, a feat that hadn't been accomplished since Elkhorn's run from 2004 to '07.

Johnson joins another list, one that is even shorter, as she takes her place as the honorary captain of the 2014 All-Nebraska team. The Central Missouri State recruit joins Papillion-La Vista's Peaches James and Elkhorn's Ashley Hagemann as the winning pitcher of state championship games as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Millard West coach Don Brummer, whose team has faced Johnson 11 times the past three seasons, said Johnson deserves credit for much more than her ability to get hitters out. He's impressed with how Johnson does it.

"She has probably one of the best softball IQs I've ever seen," Brummer said. "She has learned how to pitch to contact. That's why she'll be successful in college."

Johnson has never been an overpowering strikeout machine. As hitters have improved over the years at the collegiate level, fewer and fewer pitchers have been able to rely on getting heaters past hitters.

Brummer said Johnson's ability to understand that has served her well the past three seasons as Millard South's ace and will help her beginning next season at Central Missouri.

"When she gets down in the count she understands that she doesn't have to come all the way back," Brummer said. "Jordan understands that pitching to contact and letting her defense help her is an effective way to win games."

This year Johnson not only became Millard South's all-time leader in victories, but she also proved her prowess with a bat, hitting .429 with four doubles, one triple and two home runs. One of those round-trippers came in the state championship game win over Omaha Marian.

Meet the teams

ALL-NEBRASKA FIRST TEAM

P: Jordan Johnson (Honorary captain)

Senior, Millard South

Johnson was 17-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 100 innings of work. Most Millard South games didn't go seven innings — 23 of the Patriots' 31 wins ended early because of the run-rule. Much of that had to do with Johnson keeping opposing hitters in check. Finishing with a career record of 69-10, Johnson set school records for career wins and career shutouts (30).

P: Laura Roecker

Senior, Elkhorn

If there was a comeback player of the year award, Roecker would win in a landslide. Following a junior season lost to injury, Roecker led the Antlers to their fifth Class B state title in school history. Roecker was 21-3 with 273 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.90. At the plate she was equally effective, hitting .434 with three home runs and 29 RBIs.

P: Julia Andersen

Senior, Papillion-La Vista

Andersen heads for South Dakota State as one of the state's finest all-around players. She'll likely play outfield for the Jackrabbits, but Andersen will be remembered in Nebraska as one of the better hurlers to come from the Papillion pitching pipeline. She was 24-6 with a 2.32 ERA and no errors. At the plate, Andersen hit .447 with 14 doubles and 25 RBIs and a .743 slugging percentage.

P: Kellyn Daly

Junior, Omaha Marian

Daly and Crusaders catcher Gabbie Jonas were the most effective battery mates in the state. Daly helped lead Marian to its first appearance in the Class A state title game with a 20-6 record and a 1.30 ERA with 203 strikeouts.

C: Gabbie Jonas

Senior, Omaha Marian

Few players dared run on Jonas. She kept the few hitters who did get past hurler Kellyn Daly anchored at first base. When it was her turn to hit, Jonas was more than up to the challenge. She had a .475 average with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs.

IF: Vicky Kinney

Senior, Millard South

Kinney hit .530 with 14 home runs, nine doubles and 52 RBIs — 14 of which came with two outs. Only four errors at shortstop and five strikeouts show just how disciplined Kinney is in all aspects of the game. Kinney led the state with 53 runs scored and a .615 on-base percentage, a mark that includes 14 walks and hit by pitch six other times.

IF: Emily Klosterman

Junior, Millard West

This is the second All-Nebraska honor for Klosterman, who set a Class A single season record with her .620 batting average. She also set an all-class record with at least one hit in 29 consecutive games. The UNO recruit had eight home runs, seven triples and 14 doubles to finish with a slugging percentage of 1.185.

IF: Erin Lockhart

Senior, Lincoln Southeast

Lockhart heads to Harvard next year to pursue educational and athletic dreams. She goes with a great story to tell about her senior year — in the Knights' season-opening doubleheader with Norfolk, Lockhart was intentionally walked five times. Lockhart hit .596 with eight home runs, 12 doubles and 30 RBIs for the season.

IF: Sam Dellinger

Junior, Papillion-La Vista

The Creighton recruit hit .549 with 17 home runs and 56 RBIs for the Monarchs. Dellinger also clubbed 13 doubles and three triples while striking out only once. She finished the season with a slugging percentage of 1.235. When the 2015 season rolls around, Dellinger could be the one getting more than her fair share of intentional walks.

OF: Rylie Unzicker

Sophomore, Millard South

The Nebraska recruit was terrific once again as the Patriots leadoff hitter and center fielder. Unzicker hit .477 with 10 home runs, nine doubles, 33 RBIs and scored 44 runs. She hit .556 in the postseason and had four of her 10 HRs in those games. She had 18 walks for the season with six strikeouts and made no errors in the outfield on 28 chances.

OF: Kristen Van Hoosen

Senior, Millard West

Van Hoosen tied a state record with three home runs in one game and finished the season with nine. She also had two triples and 10 doubles, finishing the season with a slugging percentage of .549 and on-base percentage of .505. Van Hoosen was flawless in center field with no errors.

OF: Leah Kalkwarf

Senior, Millard South

When the Patriots needed a big hit to break open a game or a more-than-routine play in the outfield to save one, Kalkwarf was at her best. She hit .507 with five home runs, 24 RBIs, five doubles and walked 10 times with just six strikeouts. In the postseason, Kalkwarf hit .688 with a double and three home runs. She was 6-of-6 in Millard South's first two state tournament games.

DP: Sierra Athow

Junior, Ralston

As big of a tradition as Papillion-La Vista has with pitchers, so too does Ralston with shortstops. Athow is the latest infield anchor who led the Rams to a state tournament appearance. On defense, she only committed four errors in 29 games for a .958 fielding percentage. Athow, who also is a top-level soccer player but likely will play softball in college, hit .478 and had 37 RBIs.
