Not your garden-variety softball stars

The year’s team shined throughout the season. Papio’s Sam Dellinger is the honorary captain of The World-Herald’s softball team. The Creighton recruit is the sixth captain from her school.

Usually selecting the best softball players for postseason honors is a difficult task.

Not this year.

From the beginning of the season in mid-August, the 13 athletes selected for the 23rd World-Herald All-Nebraska softball team distinguished themselves as the best in the state. They solidified their standing during the nine-week season.

Selections were made based on ballots from coaches and World-Herald staff observations.

BRODY HILGENKAMP/WORLD-HERALD NEWS SERVICE

Honorary captain Sam Dellinger showed her versatility as a senior for Papillion-La Vista. The Creighton recruit hit .536 with 10 home runs. The starting second baseman also went 9-1 with a 1.93 ERA, striking out 74 in 54 innings in the circle.

Eight of the All-Nebraska first-teamers are seniors. There are two juniors and three sophomores.

Junior Rylie Unzicker will have a chance to add her name to the exclusive list of four-time All-Nebraska first-teamers next season. She would join Leigh Suhr and Gina Metzler of Papillion-La Vista, Ashley Eoriatti of Millard West and Bailey Dawson of Lincoln Southeast.

Papio senior Sam Dellinger has joined a different short list as honorary captain of the All-Nebraska team. The Creighton recruit is the 19th captain and sixth from the Monarch program.

Dellinger proved to be a master of many skills. Primarily a second baseman, she would have preferred not to pitch much this season. She still went 9-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 74 strikeouts and 14 walks in 54 innings.

Dellinger was productive in every facet, whether at second, in the pitching circle or the batter’s box.

In Papio’s first meeting against eventual state champion Omaha Marian, 10 of the 11 outs Dellinger recorded in relief were strikeouts.

In the Metro Conference tournament championship, Dellinger hit a two-run homer and scored twice in the Monarchs’ 5-3 win against Millard South. The home run came after the Patriots dropped a fly ball earlier in the at-bat.

“You can’t ever give her second chances,” Millard South coach Steve Kerkman said after that game. “You can never give a hitter like that extra pitches.”

Meet the teams

ALL-NEBRASKA FIRST TEAM

IF: Sam Dellinger, Senior, Papillion-La Vista (Honorary captain)

Dellinger led the Monarchs with a .536 batting average. She hit 10 home runs and 16 doubles and worked opposing pitchers for 24 walks. Dellinger also posted the number 43 in two categories — RBIs and runs scored. In the circle, the Creighton recruit finished with a 9-1 record with a 1.93 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 54 innings.

P: Kellyn Daly, Senior, Omaha Marian

Daly led the Crusaders to their first Class A state softball title in school history after Marian finished second for the first time in 2014. Last month, Daly committed to play at the University of North Carolina. She was 26-3 with 292 strikeouts in 175 innings. Daly’s ERA was 0.80 while pitching in all but three of Marian’s 32 games this season.

P: Olivia Ferrell, Junior, Elkhorn South

Ferrell was the player the Storm leaned on the most throughout the regular season and during their run to the Class B state championship game. The Nebraska recruit hit .430 with four home runs and 30 RBIs, but her biggest impressions came from the pitching circle. Ferrell was 24-7 with a 1.50 ERA and 295 strikeouts.

P: Karlee Seevers, Sophomore, York

Seevers topped her 24-4 freshman season by posting a 29-3 record with a 0.85 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 172 innings for the Dukes. She also had 15 shutouts, two no-hitters and one perfect game on the way to setting the Class B state record for consecutive victories with 25. Seevers also made big contributions on offense by hitting .340 with five doubles and 30 RBIs.

C: Mikaela Pechar, Senior, Millard West

Pechar had a memorable season helping guide the Wildcats to a third-place finish at state, teaming with pitcher Logan Black to make one of the state’s top batteries. Pechar hit .449 with 10 doubles and led Millard West with five triples, 10 home runs and 46 RBIs. She was walked 12 times and finished with an on-base percentage of .512 and a team-leading .916 slugging percentage.

IF: Rylie Unzicker, Junior, Millard South

Unzicker was asked to move to shortstop from center field this season though she had played her entire career in the outfield. She exceeded expectations in the infield as well as living up to expectations as a hitter. The Nebraska recruit hit safely in 28 of 31 games, including 16 multi-hit games, to finish with a .558 batting average. Unzicker scored 46 runs, had 22 RBIs, 12 doubles, four triples and four home runs and struck out just six times.

IF: Emily Klosterman, Senior, Millard West

Klosterman joins Unzicker in the three-time All-Nebraska selection club after another strong season as the anchor of the Wildcats’ defense at shortstop. The UNO recruit hit .417 with 17 doubles, two triples and six home runs with 28 RBIs and 40 runs scored. Klosterman’s on-base percentage was .500, and her slugging percentage was .782.

IF: Jordyn Stearns, Senior, York

Stearns leaves the Dukes program with the best single season of her career. She hit .485 with nine home runs and scored 49 runs. Her on-base percentage was .554, and she recorded a slugging percentage of .881. As a sophomore, Stearns set the all-class state record for RBIs in a season with 63. The 56 she had this year brought her career total to an all-class record of 200.

OF: Camille Fowler, Senior, Millard South

Fowler moved from right to center field this season and had the best overall campaign of her career. The South Dakota recruit tied the Class A state record by hitting in 29 consecutive games. Fowler also had school records in both batting average (.576) and hits (57). She scored 35 runs, had 21 RBIs, six doubles, and seven triples and struck out just five times. Fowler had an .838 slugging percentage and .606 OBP.

OF: Sara Sempek, Senior, Papillion-La Vista

Sempek overcame injuries the past two seasons and made up for lost time with a terrific senior campaign. She played just a few games as a sophomore after breaking her hand and missed all of 2014 with a torn ACL. This season Sempek helped lead the Monarchs to the state title game by hitting .455 with four home runs, 12 doubles and 22 RBIs. She also scored 36 runs and had a fielding percentage of .975.

OF: Caelyn Christiancy, Sophomore, Lincoln Southwest

One of three sophomores on the team, Christiancy was the top offensive player for the Silver Hawks, a team that finished with a .406 team batting average. The UNO recruit hit .496 with 64 hits and used her speed to score 53 runs and steal 33 bases. She also used that speed to cover a lot of ground in center field, where coach Mark Watt said she had a great defensive season.

DP: Samantha Alm, Sophomore, Millard West

Alm had a breakout season at second base and was one of the big reasons the Wildcats had their best finish at state in 11 years. The Creighton recruit hit .500 (53 of 106) with 11 doubles, one triple and eight home runs. Alm also scored 32 runs and drew seven walks while striking out only five times in those 106 at-bats. Her on-base percentage was .525, and she had a slugging percentage of .849.

DP: Alexis Linderman, Senior, Omaha Marian

Linderman was the winning pitcher for the Crusaders in the three games that Kellyn Daly didn’t pitch, but Linderman’s biggest contributions were at the plate and as an infielder for the Class A state champions. Crusaders coach Mike Heard said Linderman was the team leader. She hit .408 with 10 home runs and also drove in 30 runs.
