Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst offensive lineman Zach Hannon announced his commitment via Twitter on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
After several unofficial visits to NU including a June trip with extended family for Big Red Weekend the 6-foot-5 300-pounder committed to the Huskers over home-state Missouri and Arkansas. He's the 13th verbal pledge for Nebraska's 2013 class.
“It was the all-in-one package,” Hannon said of the program. “Academics. Tradition. History. I see Nebraska as on the uprise.”
A consensus three-star prospect, Hannon's recruitment was led by assistant John Garrison, a former Husker center who played high school football in Blue Springs, Mo.
“We all hit it off from the first time we met,” Hannon said of NU's coaching staff. “They pursued me. Yeah, they went after me pretty hard.”
Garrison and Co. should give an assist to Hannon's former Rockhurst teammate, Michael Rose, who plays linebacker for NU. Rose consistently recruited Hannon, accompanying him on a visit to spring practice and giving status reports during summer conditioning.
“Mike's a good friend, so I know he wouldn't tell me stuff that isn't true,” said Hannon, who added that 2013 quarterback commit Johnny Stanton stumped for the Huskers, too.
Hannon played tackle his senior year for Rockhurst and also played lacrosse.
“It keeps up my conditioning and footwork,” Hannon said. “It keeps me loose.”
Our take: He’s a level-headed and hard-working prospect who has the skills to develop into a star for Nebraska. From all accounts, Hannon matured as a leader last year. His approach to the game should translate well to the next level. He’ll likely need a year to work on his strength and gain some familiarity with the NU offense. But that’s fine. The Huskers have experience returning on the interior.
