About this database

Thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country receive surplus military equipment under the Pentagon's 1033 program. Among them are 179 agencies in Nebraska and Iowa that collectively hold 1,890 surplus items — everything from assault rifles to night vision sets to armored trucks.

To better understand how Midlands law enforcement agencies are using surplus military equipment, The World-Herald compiled and reviewed current 1033 inventories for both states. The data were obtained from federal surplus managers at the Nebraska Department of Corrections and the Iowa Fire Marshal.

Population figures are 2013 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. Officer counts, where available, come from the FBI's "Crime in the United States" report.
